I Am Fred runs away with SVREL 6th Anniversary Trophy race
CHAMPION trainer Jason DaCosta grabbed the spotlight at the races when he saddled three winners, including I Am Fred, in the $1.5-million Supreme Ventures Racing and Entertainment Limited (SVREL) 6th Anniversary Trophy feature at Caymanas Park on Saturday.
Former champion conditioner Anthony Nunes kept pace with DaCosta with three winners also.
It was expected to be a walk in the park for DaCosta’s She’s My Destiny in the Graded Stakes/Open Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over five and a half furlongs (1,100m), but the American-bred I Am Fred had other ideas and got up in time to beat rivals by three quarters of a length at the wire.
Ridden by Roger Hewitt, I Am Fred, who was coming off a three-month break, tracked the leaders from fifth position going into the half-mile (800m) turn as She’s My Destiny (Robert Halledeen) led ahead of Duke (Dane Dawkins) and King Arthur (Omar Walker).
With She’s My Destiny and Duke continuing to battle for control in deep stretch, I Am Fred produced a late run to get up in time to beat Duke and She’s My Destiny, in that order. The final time for the race was 1:06.3.
DaCosta’s other winners on the 10-race card were Lion of Ekati (Reyan Lewis) in the fifth race and Inspired Miracle (Robert Halledeen) in the seventh race.
I Am Fred was Hewitt’s second winner on the day as he earlier won aboard Secret Traveller for trainer Robert Ffrench in the third race, while Inspired Miracle was Halledeen’s second winner as well as he won the opening event aboard Traveller’s Lodge for trainer Christopher Pearson.
Meanwhile, Nunes was successful with GT Boy (Youville Pinnock) at 40-1 in the second race; Milos (Tevin Foster) in the ninth race; and Nefertari, also ridden by Foster, in the 10th and final event.
Racing continues today with a nine-race programme. First post is at 12:15 pm.
