Bunny Shaw is City women’s highest scorer
Reggae Girl Khadija “Bunny” Shaw is Manchester City women’s highest scorer in a single season, across all competitions, following the team’s 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday at Broadfield Stadium in Crawley, United Kingdom.
The Jamaican international nabbed the elite title with fixtures to spare, after registering a brace that logged her 25th and 26th goals this season across competitions. The record-breaking tally puts some daylight between her and the former record holder and ex-City forward Nikita Parris’s 24-goal haul during the club’s 2018/2019 season.
Shaw’s 26 goals have come from 22 matches across all competitions.
Clad in City’ red and black away kit, Shaw opened the scoring in the 21st minute, before Brighton’s Elisabeth Terland answered the call to level the game in the 33rd minute. Brighton held City for a long spell, with the fixture seemingly headed for a draw. But the persistence of Shaw gifted a second goal to sink Brighton in the 89th minute.
The in-form striker’s double moved City level on 35 points with second-place rivals Manchester United, but third place overall in the league on goal difference. United fell 0-1 to Chelsea via a Sam Kerr strike. Chelsea remain at the top of the Women’s Super League on 37 points with a game in hand.
Shaw – whose club tally sits at a more-than-respectable 45 goals from 51 appearances – has been on an especially hot streak over the past weeks. Since the beginning of 2023, Shaw has managed to record more than a dozen goals, including multiple braces, a hat-trick, and a four-goal haul.
The Manchester City number 21 has netted 15 league goals so far this season, a strong petition for the coveted Golden Boot award. Shaw previously won a Golden Boot during her stint with France’s first division outfit Bordeaux, after scoring 22 goals in her second and final season with the club.
The Reggae Girl recently signed a contract extension with Nike, and has also held a brand partnership with KFC Jamaica since last year.
