Hydel’s Reid delighted with 200m Carifta Trial win
Hydel’s Alana Reid was very delighted and relieved after winning the Girls’ Under-20 200-metre title on Sunday’s final day of the three-day Carifta Trial at the National Stadium.
Reid, who was the favourite to win the sprint double at the championships, was beaten into second place by Edwin Allen’s Serena Cole in the final of the 100m on Saturday. However, she produced an excellent performance to win the 200m in 22.96 seconds a day later.
The diminutive Reid flew out of the blocks before pulling away from the chasing pack to win the event by approximately five metres. Carletta Bernard from Mount Alvernia was second in 23.51 while third went to Sabrina Dockery from Lacovia in 23.93.
“I am extremely tired but, nevertheless, I just went out there and did my best because I know that I can do it,” said Reid.
“I am also glad that I came out here and showed everyone what I am capable of, and I just can’t wait to be at the Carifta Games,” she said.
Reid, who is the world Under-20 200m bronze medallist, came close to eclipsing her personal best time of 22.95 in the event.
“I am very surprised with the time because I didn’t expect to run so close to my personal best. But, I know what I am capable of doing and so it is back to the drawing [board] now for Champs [the high school championships],” said the 18-year-old.
Jamaica College’s Malique Smith-Band won the Boys’ Under-20 200m with a time of 21.13, in front of St Elizabeth Technical’s Javone Dunkley (21.29) and Delano Kennedy (21.48) of Edwin Allen.
Natrece East of Wolmer’s captured the Under-17 girls’ sprint double title after winning the 200m in 24.47, ahead of Shanoya Douglas (24.78) of Mushcett and Onetta Mitchell (25.04) of Hydel.
East, who has been having an outstanding season so far, had won the Under-17 100m title on Saturday.
Calabar’s Donte Mendez produced a massive personal best time to win the boys’ equivalent in 21.92. Dontae Watson from JC was a distant second in 22.17, while Greater Pormore’s Yyreek Robinson finished third in 22.20.
Kemarrio Bygrave won the Boys’ Under-20 800m title in 1:50.20. Ainsley from Port Antonio was second in 1:51.42, while Barrin Smith from St Elizabeth Technical was third in 1:52.42.
Roshawn Clarke from Swept Track club produced a good time of 50.52 seconds to win the Boys’ Under-20 400m hurdles event.
Kingston College’s Antonio Forbes, who has been enjoying a good season, was second in 50.68 while third went to Edwin Allen’s Tyrece Hyman in 51.77.
Tonyan Beckford from Edwin Allen won the Girls’ Under-20 400m hurdles in 57.33, in front of Hydel’s Alliah Baker (57.60) and Annalice Brady (59.33) of Holmwood Technical.
Jamaica College’s DeAndre Gayle won the Boys’ Under-17 400m hurdles in a time of 53.17, ahead of Excelsior’s Demarco Bennett (53.24) and Tajoneil Gordon (54.22) of KC.
Jody-Ann Daley of Hydel won the girls’ equivalent in 1:01.50, ahead of Rhianna Lewis of Rhodes Hall who clocked 1:01.74 while Latanya Dixon from St Mary High finished third in 1:05.06.
