Nkrumie could be sidelined for four weeks
JAMAICA’S National Under-20 100m record holder Bouwahjgie Nkrumie could be out of action for up to a month after he was diagnosed with a grade one injury to his hamstring following his failure to complete the first-round heat of the Under-20 boys’ 100m on Saturday’s first day of the 50th Carifta Games at Thomas Robinson Stadium in Nassau, The Bahamas.
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan confirmed Nkrumie’s injury, the Jamaica Team Manager Richard Thompson told the Jamaica Observer on Sunday, after the procedure which was done on Saturday.
“Nkrumie, in fact, did an MRI and the result is showing a grade one hamstring injury,” Thompson said while adding the athlete was in a good mood.
“He has accepted that fact and is in high spirits, encouraging his other teammates,” Thompson said.
Dr Lincoln Cox, who has travelled with a number of Jamaican track and field teams over the last decade, told the Observer that Nkrumie will “need rest and treatment”. He said the sprinter could be back in training in the next month or so.
Cox, who is not with the team in The Bahamas, said treatment for such an injury mostly involves physiotherapy to strengthen the muscle, and rest to ensure proper healing.
Nkrumie, who ran a personal best 9.99 seconds to win the Boys’ Class 1 100m during the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/ GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships last weekend, was expected to battle for the gold medal at the Carifta Games. He got off to a good start in his heat on Saturday morning, and led up to the 80-metre mark before slowing down and clutching his right hamstring.
