Double Olympic champion Elaine Thompson-Herah was second in her season-opening 200m race in 23.23 seconds (1.8m/s) at the Tom Jones Memorial at the Percy Beard field at the University of Florida on Friday.

Thompson-Herah, who won the Commonwealth Games 200m in Birmingham last year, finished behind American Melissa Jefferson (23.02 seconds) in the first of two sections of the women’s 200m Olympic Development race.

Jamaica’s other representative, Junelle Bromfield, was seventh overall in 23.72 seconds.

Nigel Ellis was fourth in the men’s 200m in 21.01 seconds (-1.2m/s) as American Noah Lyles won with 20.16 seconds.

A number of other Jamaicans are down to compete in other Olympic Development events on Saturday as Kiara Grant contests the women’s 100m; Julian Forte, Ryiem Forde, Nigel Ellis and Sachin Dennis will contest the men’s 100m; Crystal Morrison, Danielle Williams and Kerrica Hill will contest the women’s 100m hurdles; Commonwealth Games champion Rasheed Broadbell will contest the 110m hurdles.

Brittany Brown, Bromfield, Stacey-Ann Williams, Andrenette Knight and Natoya Goule will contest the women’s 400m, while Javon Francis, Akeem Bloomfield, Jaheel Hyde, Chavannie Hanson and Rajay Hamilton will contest the men’s 400m.

Also at the Tom Jones Memorial on Friday, former national junior representative Daniel Cope of Clemson University threw a personal best 62.87m to place second in the men’s college hammer throw.

The mark that surpassed his previous best of 62.75m, set two weeks ago at the Texas Relay, also saw him move up to third place on the Clemson University all-time list.

At the 63rd Mt San Antonio College Relays, former St Elizabeth Technical runner Robin Black of Academy of Art University ran a personal best 51.96 seconds to place second in the men’s 400m hurdles, lowering his previous best 52 47 seconds.

Former Excelsior High runner Devontie Archer of the University of Arkansas was fourth with 52.44 seconds and his teammate Jeremy Farr was fifth in 52.54 seconds.

Niesha Burgher of the University of Texas-El Paso (UTEP) was second in the college women’s 100m in a personal best 11.51 seconds (0.2m/s), while her teammate Jordani Woodley was sixth in the college men’s 110m hurdles running 14.16 (1.9m/s) in the final after leading the prelims with 13.64 seconds (0.1m/s).

Shaquena Foote of San Diego State University clocked 54.06 seconds in her first outdoors 400m race while Annalee Robinson of South Dakota ran 54.35 seconds.
