Levell won’t rush decision on future
With a number of offers from colleges and local professional clubs for Edwin Allen sprinter Bryan Levell, his Coach Leon Powell says he will not be rushed into a decision on his future.
Levell, 19, is in his final year of high school.
“Bryan is a man that likes to keep his options open until he has to make a decision,” Powell told the Jamaica Observer. “Right now everything is open, university and going professional is all open because he has a big table with a lot of offers on it. He is just taking his time to go through and see what is best for him and where he wants to go.
“I think that when the time comes for him to make that decision, I will definitely advise him to take what is best in his interest.
“I think his performance at the end of the season will also determine where he goes. Right now, everything is still up in the air and he is still getting offers and he just wants the best offer available to him because these offers are coming in from local clubs and abroad.”
Levell, who has personal best (PB) times of 10.21 seconds in the 100m and 20.34 in the 200m, missed last month’s ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ and Girls’ Athletics Championships because of a hamstring injury.
He also suffered a similar injury in May 2022, forcing him out of the National Junior Championships that summer.
However, he recovered in time to place sixth in the final of the 200m at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, where he clocked the PB.
Powell says Levell has now fully recovered from his injury and he is looking forward to competing in the 4x100m and 4x400m relays at the Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, next weekend and at the National Championships in June.
“Bryan is in good shape and he is looking forward to rolling out at the Penn Relays next week and to compete well,” Powell said.
“He is very confident at the moment because he wants to bow out of his high school track and field career with a bang at the Penn Relays.
“Mentally and physically, he has gotten over the injury, so he is just ready and raring to go at the Penn Relays.
“The plan is to have him compete at the senior trials and who knows what will happen, but he is ready and he should get better as we approach trials.”
