‘WORK TO BE DONE’
Despite his team’s progression to the semi-finals of the Lynk Cup football competition, Portmore United’s Head Coach Philip Williams has stressed that his side will have to be more solid defensively if they are going to be champions.
Portmore United secured their place in the last four of the competition after playing out an exciting 2-2 draw with Molynes United at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex on Thursday. The St Catherine-based outfit advanced 4-3 on aggregate after a 2-1 victory in their first leg.
Chevaughn Walsh netted both goals for Portmore United in the eighth and 62nd minutes.
Portmore United led 2-0 midway the second half of the match before Nicholas Nelson scored two goals for Molynes United in the 75th and 87th minutes.
“I think it was a decent performance from us, but where we gave up the goals, I think the goalkeeper could have done much better for us,” Williams said.
“There is work to be done before the semi-finals because we gave up two goals in this leg and one in the first leg and that is uncharacteristic of us, so we have to go back to being defensively strong and continue scoring goals.”
Walsh gave Portmore the lead early in the match when he arrived at the centre of the 18-yard box to fire home a well-placed left-sided cross from Emelio Rousseau.
Portmore, who dominated the first half, created several other chances, but solid defending from Molynes United unit kept them at bay.
Walsh, who tormented the Molynes United defenders with his swift dribbling and off the ball movement, doubled his team’s lead when he collected a pass out of the midfield from Alex Marshall before skipping away from two defenders to fire home past goalkeeper Peter Harrison.
However, Nelson pulled one back for Molynes United when he fired home from the penalty spot to reduce the deficit to 2-1, this after he was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Benjamin Williams.
Nelson scored his second goal three minutes from time when he headed home past Williams. However, despite dominating the final minutes, Molynes United failed to capitalise on a number of scoring chances as Portmore held on for the victory.
