Gov’t pledges additional $10m to Sunshine Girls
The Government of Jamaica has donated an additional $10 million in funding towards the Jamaica Sunshine Girls’ road to South Africa campaign for this year’s Netball World Cup tournament.
Minister of Sports Olivia ‘Babsy’ Grange made the announcement during a press launch which was held at The Summit in Kingston on Friday.
This has now brought the Government’s support to the Sunshine Girls team to $20 million for this year’s Netball World Cup, which will be held in Cape Town from July 28 to August 6.
Grange said that the Government is committed to the development of sport in Jamaica.
“I felt that it was necessary to give them all the support that was possible from my end. They have good support from the private sector and I felt as Government that we must also step up to the plate.”
President of Netball Jamaica Tricia Robinson said her association is very grateful to the Government for their support but they are still in need of an additional $20 million to send the team to the championships.
“I am very happy because they have reduced our target by $10 million and so we are now at a $20 million shortfall and so we are imploring corporate Jamaica to come on board and support us,” Robinson said.
