Racing News for Saturday, April 22, 2023

RARE WINNER FOR BORRIS MCINTOSH

Trainer Borris McIntosh, in only his second start for the season, was able to get off the mark after his charge Bay Commander came good in a five-year-old and upwards Claiming ($180,000-$150,000) spread that also included native-bred six-year-old and upwards (non-winners of two) at 5½ furlongs (1,100m).

Ridden by Bebeto Harvey, Bay Commander sat behind the early pace, watching as Matriarch (Roger Hewitt) carried the field into the half-mile (800m) turn ahead of My Smokey (Phillip Parchment) and Trulicity (Romario Spencer). Approaching the distance, Bay Commander started to improve on the leaders as he raced just on the heels of Ridewiththemob (Nicholas Hibbert), who rounded horses to go down in third place coming off the final bend.

Turning for home, Bay Commander found his running shoes, made strong headway on rivals, and joined Ridewiththemob on the front at the furlong pole (200m) before sprinting off to win by 3¼ lengths at the wire. Ridewiththemob was second and My Smokey was third, with a final time of 1:11.2.

ANCHORMAN

Trained by Anthony Nunes and ridden by Tevin Foster, Anchorman got up in the time to win the a for native-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of two) and also imported four-year-olds and upwards (maidens) travelling 7½ furlongs (1,400m).

Anchorman raced in mid-pack down the backstretch after exiting his starting barrier and watched as Princess Sylvia (Shane Richardson) led the field, just a neck ahead of Tigray Express (Dane Dawkins) with AKA Storm (Javaniel Patterson) behind.

With the field making their way into the half-mile turn Princess Sylvia continued to lead ahead of Tigray Express as Anchorman rounded horses and slipped down into third place as they approached the distance.

Entering the straight going four wide, Anchorman produced a strong run in deep stretch which was enough to beat Princess Sylvia by half-length. AKA Storm finished third. The final time was 1:36.4 (24.2 x 48.0 x 1:13.3).

DODGE THIS LINK

After finishing second by a short head to Danny Spud over the straight on March 19, Dodge This Link returned and went one better in a three-year-old and upwards Optional Claiming ($400,000-$300,000) call that included native-bred six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of four) and imported six-year-olds and upwards (non-winners of three) going 6½ furlongs (1,300m).

Dodge This Link got off well as champion jockey Dane Dawkins held the six-year-old chestnut gelding in third place behind Smoke Haze (Aaron Chatrie) and Yetagain (Phillip Parchment).

With Yetagain unable to keep up with the pace, fading through the field, Dodge This Link surged to second place navigating the half-mile turn before hitting the front at the top of the lane.

Dodge This Link, although challenged briefly by Devonte’ (Tevin Foster) in deep stretch, powered home to score by 3 lengths in a time of 1:23.4. Devonte’ finished in second place, ahead of XY Soul (Reyan Lewis) in third.

SCOOBY

Four-year-old bay colt Scooby (Casual Trick – Royal Dutch) completed his third-consecutive victory in a native-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of four) and imported four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over 6 furlongs (1,200m).

With Anthony Thomas riding for trainer Richard Azan, Scooby got a decent break, racing in fourth place behind KP Choice (Ameth Robles), Love Dub (Javaniel Patterson), and Tekapunt (Reyan Lewis) going into the half-mile turn.

Nothing much changed in terms of the running order turning for home. However when all seemed lost inside the final of the race, with KP Choice still looking strong on the front end, Thomas produced his mount for one last effort and Scooby found his way between rivals to beat Tekapunt and KP Choice, in that order, by a head on the wire.

After splits of 23.1 x 47.0 the final time was recorded at 1:13.4.

FIVE HORSES CLAIMED

Gordon Lewis claimed Ridewiththemob for owner Gilbert Khwalsingh for $180,000 from Delroy Wisdom while Michael Hall claimed My Smokey for owner Errol Dickson for $180,000 from Donovan Plummer in the first race.

In the third race Percival Hussey claimed Dodge This Link for owner Philip Azar from Ryan Williams, Stedman Curtis claimed Devonte’ for owner Samora Clarke from Tyrone Prince, and Anthony Nunes claimed Dracarys for owner Ajax Bjorn and Andrew Donalds from Keffin Murray.

Trainer Richard Azan (right) makes a point to jockey Anthony Thomas after the two combined to land victory with Scooby.
