Montego Bay edge Cavalier, Mt Pleasant hammer Dunbeholden

Montego Bay United maintained their seven-point lead in the Jamaica Premier League after holding off defending champions Cavalier 1-0 while former champions Mount Pleasant FA hammered Dunbeholden FC 4-0 in their second round games on Sunday.

At Jarrett Park, a second half penalty from Dwight Merrick helped Montego Bay avenge their first round 3-0 loss to Cavalier as the champions lost their 11th game of the season which dropped them to eighth place on 29 points.

Despite dominating the game, Montego Bay had to wait until the 55th minute to get on the score sheet when Deonjay Brown was fouled inside the Cavalier 18-yard box and Merrick made no mistake from the spot, scoring his 10th goal of the season.

At Drax Hall, Raheen Edwards opened the scoring for Mount Pleasant in the 21st minute and Daniel Green added the second in the 28th minute. Shaquille Bradford and Alex Marshall came off the bench to add to the score in the second half as they won their 11th game of the season.

After being held to back-to-back 0-0 draws by Treasure Beach FC, Mount Pleasant returned to winning ways but stayed in third place on 41 points, two more than Portmore United and one point behind second-placed Racing United who beat Molynes United 1-0 on Sunday.

Racing maintained their second place after a late goal from substitute Dwight Gentles gave them three points over Molynes who went down to 10 men from the 18th minute when Sergeni Frankson was sent off.

Waterhouse FC’s four-game winning run ended after they were held 1-1 by Tivoli Gardens. Waterhouse took the lead in the third minute when Cardel Benbow converted a penalty but Tivoli equalised through Anthony Nelson in the 41st minute.

Chapelton Maroons won back-to-back games with a 2-0 win over Treasure Beach. Sean Leighton scored in the 53rd minute and Jason Wright added a second in time added as they moved to fifth place on 32 points.

At the foot of the table, Spanish Town Police edged Harbour View FC 1-0. Carlington Blackwood scored the winner in the 70th minute, their second win in three games, which lessened the gap between them and Harbour View to one point.

Sunday’s Results
Spanish Town Police FC-1 Harbour View-0
Chapelton Maroons 2, Treasure Beach FC-0
Montego Bay United 1, Cavalier SC-0
Mount Pleasant FA 4, Dunbeholden FC-0
Molynes United 0, Racing United-1
Waterhouse FC-1, Tivoli Gardens FC-1
