Justice Minister commends office of the DPP
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has been commended on its work by Justice Minister Delroy Chuck.
“They have done a fantastic job, not only in prosecuting very serious cases like the gang trial but, indeed, during the course of last year, they did 1,122 cases when representing the Crown in criminal matters,” Chuck said.
He was speaking during his contribution to the 2023/24 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives, on Tuesday.
The DPP’s Office prosecutes criminal cases on behalf of the State while building public trust in the justice system.
They also help to promote justice for peace and harmony, by ensuring fairness and impartiality for all.
Chuck also informed that the judicial system’s overall case disposal rate averaged 95 per cent, based on projections for the year.
He further indicated that Rural Circuit Gun Courts exceeded projections by 30 per cent.
“The DPP has now implemented a Results-Based Management System and has managed to set turnaround performance indicators of 24 to 48 hours for various instructions or advice,” the Minister said.
Chuck added that the DPP’s Office has now cleared all its backlog of vintage cases.
