On Mother’s Day, Andrea Wright plans to celebrate with laughter by staging her play Ex-Baby Motha at Hydel High School in St Andrew.

Best known for her role as Delcita, she said the day is an extension of her profession.

“I celebrate Mother’s Day by educating and entertaining mothers. As a guidance counsellor and comedic actress I get a super adrenalin from the howls of laughter,” she said. “Mother’s Day shows have a freshness, from the high-fashion exhibits of moms, grandmas and guardians, their perfume permeates the audience and I feel proud to be the recipient of the mixed fragrances.”

At Sunday’s show, which starts at 6:30, the first 50 female patrons will be treated to cheesecake and wine.

The day before, Ex-Baby Motha plays Old Harbour Primary School in St Catherine.

Wright is from Frankfield in Clarendon, where she was raised by her paternal grandmother, Miss Esther. She became acquainted with her mother, Miss Edna, in her teens.

“The relationship with my mother is one of respect and gratefulness. I met her when I was 16 years old. I am eternally grateful to my now deceased grandmother, Miss Esther, who nurtured me from I was eight months old. I am forever grateful to the genetic codes of ladies, Edna and Esther; Mummy and Mama,” she said.

Wright is the mother of one child, a daughter, with whom she shares a strong bond.

“My child has made me the parent I am. I changed profession from a computer technician and information technology teacher to being a trained guidance counsellor just because I wanted to be an effective parent,” she disclosed. “She praises me every day. We buck heads and she reminds me that we have unique personalities. Also, I remind her I must do my job as the parent such that she doesn’t blame me. I wave my parental right to be most times right. I love the job of parenting; both the tears and the joys.”

Wright plays Ex-Baby Motha, which opened one year ago. She also wrote and directed the play which looks at the psychological effects broken homes have on children.

Her cast-mates are Trudy Campbell, Kai-Alana O’Conner, Calneth Reid, and Derricka Johnson.
