Callous!
PORT MARIA, St Mary – The level of callousness shown by an individual who stole a crash victim’s cash and phone after using the device to alert the injured person’s relatives has left a senior cop hoping people will be kinder to each other.
“Just recently at the scene of an accident, the victim’s cellular phone was taken along with the money he had on him. The person went through his phone and told family members he was injured and taken to hospital and that was that,” said superintendent of police in charge of St Mary, Bobbette Morgan.
She called for this insensitive behaviour to stop.
Morgan was speaking during the most recent sitting of the St Mary Municipal Corporation, held last Thursday.
She was providing an update on road fatalities, which continue to be one of the challenges she and the members of her team face.
According to Morgan, since the start of the year there have been 119 motor vehicle crashes including eight fatal crashes that left 11 people dead.
In addition to theft of personal items, she noted that in some of these cases cold-hearted individuals have taken graphic pictures of crashes and victims.
Turning to the issue of major crimes, Morgan told the meeting that, since the start of the year, there have been 12 reported murders, two of which have been solved.
She pointed out that one of the hindrances to cases not being solved is that individuals are hesitant to give statements.
