Ramp attendant fined $50,000 for jewellery he ‘found’
A ramp attendant at Sangster International Airport was fined $50,000 in the St James Parish Court on Friday for failing to account for a quantity of jewellery that was discovered in his possession at the airport.
Twenty-year-old Shamar Williams pleaded guilty to unlawful possession of property before presiding Parish Judge Sasha-Marie Smith-Ashley.
Williams was allegedly stopped and searched at the domestic checkpoint at the airport earlier this month by a Port Authority security officer, the court was told.
While being searched, six silver bracelets, one pearl bracelet, two silver rings and a pair of gold-plated earrings were found in his possession, for which he could not give an account.
When cautioned, he reportedly said, “Officer, I found them inside of a pouch in the baggage holding area.”
Prior to handing down sentence Smith-Ashley informed the accused that his actions had ruined his previous good record, and ordered him to pay a $50,000 fine or spend three months in jail.
