WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – Motorists driving across central and eastern parts of Westmoreland are set to benefit from improved road surfaces upon the completion of massive rehabilitation projects valued at over $350 million being undertaken by the National Works Agency (NWA).

The projects will cover the roadways between Withorn to Highgate, which is valued at $193 million, Highgate to Darliston to be done for $129 million and the Shrewsberry to Logwood roadway, which attracts a price tag of $35.8 million.

The scope of the works under the projects include bushing, drainage improvement, scarifying and reshaping of the roadway and resurfacing of the roadway using asphalt concrete.

The projects, which started last week, are scheduled for completion in seven months.

Community Relations Officer at the NWA’s Western Office, Janel Ricketts, explained that the work on the Shrewsbury thoroughfare is actually in the second phase.

The Shrewsberry project is actually the second phase of a targeted approach to repairing the roadway in that community.

“In June last year the NWA commenced the rehabilitation of a section of the roadway in the community. It was substantially completed in early February 2023 at a cost of $24.6 million,” Ricketts told OBSERVER ONLINE.

“The project involved drainage improvement and the reshaping and asphalting of a section of the roadway. This current phase of the programme complements the earlier works,” she added.
