Unbeaten Cornwall AIA capture Sandals youth football titles

TUCKER, St James — Cornwall Athletes in Action (AIA) were crowned St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Under-15 and Under-17 champions on Sunday when they won their respective finals at WesPow Park.

Unbeaten Cornwall AIA blanked Green Pond High 3-0 in the Under-15 final, while AIA came from two goals down against Irwin Academy at half-time in the Under-17 final to earn a 2-2 draw and then won 4-2 on penalty kicks. They, too, were unbeaten over the course of the season.

It was the second time AIA had to come from behind and win on penalties after they had drawn 1-1 with St James High in the semi-finals as well.

St James High finished third in both competitions, beating AIA 4-0 in the Under-15 with Jevaughn Freeburn scoring a double, in the 21st and 49th minutes, Rory Smith also scored in the 28th minute and Ronardo Finderson in the 59th minute.

In the Under-17 consolation game, Jaleel Barnett scored a double as St James High came from a goal down to edge Green Pond 2-1.

Dasshaun Barrett fired Green Pond into the lead after just two minutes but Barnett equalised in the ninth minute before scoring the winner in the 65th minute.

In the Under-15 final, Kavontea Gooden, who was later named Most Valuable Player, scored twice to lead Cornwall AIA to a 3-0 win, scoring in the 17th and 40th minutes after Carlando Morris had given them the lead in the seventh minute.

Cornwall AIA had topped the points tables with 13 points, five more than St James High before beating AIA in the semi-final.

Irwin Academy, who had topped the Under-17 tables in the first round, one point ahead of AIA, took the lead in the 11th minute through Jaleel Drummond and Kevin Wright doubled the advantage in the 21st minute.

Raheem Lee scored twice in the second half, pulling one back in the 42nd minute before tying up the scores directly from a corner in time added on to force penalties.
