Following Jamaica’s women’s national team’s 2-2 draw with Brazil in the Pan American Confederation Hockey 5s World Cup Qualifiers, Technical Director Michelle Holt believes the Jamaicans have what it takes to compete throughout the championship.

But she says they need to improve their goal-scoring sharpness.

Playing at the Mona Hockey Field on Monday, Imauny Linton scored both of Jamaica’s goals in the ninth and 13th minutes, while Anna De Almeida (fifth minute) and Micaela De Melo (14th minute) got the goals for the Brazilians.

“I think we were by far the better team, but the result didn’t show it. Our composure in front of goal is still something we need to work on, and the [players] don’t keep composed as they go back to their old habit of hitting hard and flat.

“However, [we] scored two, but we had so many opportunities. We are rebuilding, and we have come from a long way down. We are happy to be competing, but we are a good team, and there are just little things we have to fix. The more games you play, the more composed you will get,” Holt told the Jamaica Observer.

The Jamaican women’s team, which lost 1-2 to Trinidad and Tobago in their first game on Sunday, will finish the group stages against Uruguay in a contest set to start 6:20 this evening.

Meanwhile, the men’s squad was tied 2-2 with Panama at press time on Monday.

The hockey 5s qualifiers, which started on Sunday, will end on June 11. Eight teams are competing in the men’s category with the same number of squads vying in the women’s category.

Teams are vying for places to next year’s World Cup.
