Hempress Sativa to release second album ‘Charka’
Reggae artiste Hempress Sativa is set to release her second album Charka on June 16.
Her new album marks her recent return to the stage with songs like Sound the Trumpet, Ghetto Life, Top Rank Queens and Time Has Come, and follows her 2017 debut album Unconquerebel.
The album was made in collaboration with producer Conquering Lion Records, whose roots can be traced back to the iconic Conquering Lion Sound which was born in the cool hills of Manchester.
According to Hempress Sativa, the forthcoming project is a reflection of a personal journey and experiences, touching on themes of love, self-discovery and social justice in 12 tracks that showcase her signature blend of roots-reggae, with elements of dub and dancehall.
Sativa, whose given name is Kerida Johnson, pays tribute to father Albert ‘Ilawi’ Johnson, who surrounded her with the consciousness of his Jah Love Sound System, in the song Give Me Loving, on which the veteran selector and musician is also featured.
Known for her soulful voice and conscious lyrics, dubbed the ‘lyrical machine’ by her peers, Hempress Sativa’s approach to the music is to bare her true soul and to also treat supporters of reggae music to a timeless catalogue.
“I am reminded of the profound influence of my parents’ strong Ras Tafari and Pan African background, which led to my nickname ‘Charka,’ meaning ‘Life.’ This name carries significant meaning for me, as I was born prematurely at seven months.
“Charka serves as a representation of the diverse stages of life that I have encountered and embraced,” she said of the new album, adding “Throughout the album, I delve into various themes such as love, self-awareness, and my personal experiences within the music industry. Each track holds a unique perspective,” Sativa said.
For example, she said, the song Give Me Loving explores the complexities of love and relationships, while Ghetto Life reflects on her upbringing in the ghettos of Mona Common.
No One But Jah, she said, is a tribute to the Most High, “expressing my gratitude and praise”.
Top Rank Queen celebrates the incredible strength and beauty of Rastafari women, while Wisdom encapsulates her personal experiences and insights within the music industry, she explained.
“My intention was to weave melodies and emotions that tell a compelling tale. I cannot express enough how excited I am to share this album with my dedicated supporters, who have shown immense patience and support throughout my musical journey. Their unwavering belief in my artistry has given me the freedom to pour my heart and soul into my work, and for that, I am profoundly grateful. The overwhelming sense of community and resonance I feel is truly inspiring,” Sativa said.
As for the six years in between her first album and now, Hempress Sativa is ready to embrace the ever-changing landscape by adding her own spirituality into the mix as one of the ‘top rank queens’ of the genre. She has earned the respect of veteran songbirds Sister Nancy and Sister Carol, who have joined her on the Top Rank Queens track, transforming it into a dynamic and empowering collaboration.
Hempress Sativa is inviting persons out to Kingston DubClub on Wednesday, June 14, 2023 to see her shine alongside her band, The Unconquerebels, for the launch of Charka.
