Accountant handed 26-year sentence for 2018 deadly shooting of taxi operator
TRELAWNY, Jamaica- Phillip Whittaker, the 57-year-old accountant who was convicted for the 2018 murder of 43-year-old Trelawny taxi operator, Garfield Binloss, was sentenced to 26 years in prison when he appeared in the Trelawny Circuit Court on Friday, July 7.
Whittaker was found guilty by a panel of jurors when he appeared in the Trelawny Circuit Court earlier this month.
The sentence was handed down by Chief Justice, Bryan Sykes.
Whittaker will have to serve 15 years before he becomes eligible for parole.
The court heard that about 11:00 pm on Thursday, November 8, 2018, Whittaker, a licensed firearm holder, shot and killed Binloss during a dispute in Falmouth.
Whittaker reported the incident to the Falmouth Police Station where he was held and subsequently charged after being interrogated in the presence of his attorney.
He was represented in the Trelawny Circuit Court by Christopher Townsend.
