Just as Jamaica’s vibrant history of Independence spans 62 years, so does the illustrious legacy of the National Dance Theatre Company’s (NDTC).

The ensemble’s 2023 season of dance, themed Connecting Past, Present and Future, begins July 21 at The Little Theatre.

At the heart of the group’s preparation stands Marlon Simms, the visionary artistic director who has led the company since 2018, guiding them through their gruelling rehearsals for the grand opening.

Fresh off triumphant performances at the Atlanta Symphony Theatre and Schubert Theatre in Connecticut, Simms returns with renewed energy.

Under his leadership, the company has adopted a fresh approach to running a theatre ensemble, embracing the digital age with gusto. Recognising the power of technology, Marlon has prioritised building a captivating website and cultivating a vibrant social media presence, especially during the challenging times of the pandemic. With an impressive following of nearly 10,000 devoted enthusiasts on Instagram, Marlon focuses on engaging with the next generation of dance lovers and nurturing the unwavering loyalty of cultural enthusiasts.

Immersed in the rich tapestry of Jamaica’s history, the NDTC’s website stands as a digital archive, a testament to the legacy of Professor Rex Nettleford and the visionary founders.

The company’s essence transcends dance alone. It encompasses a symphony of artistic expression. This year, led by Musical Director Dr Kathy Brown and her music captain Conrod Hall, their homage reverberates through the melodies of Jimmy Cliff, a reggae icon whose influence embodies the soul of Jamaica.

The NDTC thrives with the support of a dedicated team of volunteers, patrons, and donors. This year a significant portion of the season’s proceeds will go towards charitable endeavours, reflecting the company’s commitment to giving back and making a positive impact.

The season wil run for four weekends.
