30 provisionally entered in 103rd Jamaica Derby

As the 103rd running of the historic Jamaica Derby, the fifth and final Classic race of the season sponsored by BetMakers Technology Group, approaches on August 7, 30 of the best native-bred three-year-olds have been provisionally entered.

As expected, 1000 Guineas winner Mamma Mia and St Leger winner Thalita, both trained by Jason DaCosta, are among the provisional entrants, as is 2000 Guineas hero Mojito, trained by Richard Azan.

On July 1, all three runners competed in the Jamaica St Leger over 10 furlongs (2,000m), with Thalita winning by six lengths over Fitzroy Glispie’s Money Miser and Princess Sharon. Mojito ended in eighth place, while Mamma Mia finished sixth.

Thalita and Mamma Mia have also entered the Jamaica Oaks (August 5), thus it is unclear whether any or both will run here.

Mojito

Mojito, last season’s top two-year-old, gave his worst performance yet in the Jamaica St Leger, but this grey horse, if all in well with him, can easily rebound and blast these away. Mojito’s preparation will be watched carefully as the Derby date gets closer.

Princess Sharon has only joined the Jamaica Oaks, leaving Money Miser to represent Glispie. Money Miser, who finished second in the 2000 Guineas on June 4, is expected to be a leading contender in this race and could go one better.

Ability, trained by Patrick Lynch, and Huntsman, trained by Ian Parsard, are two more significant Derby candidates.

Ability comes into this race a fresh as ever.

Money Misera

He came fourth in the 2000 Guineas and skipped the Jamaica St Leger, so he should benefit from fresh legs in the Derby.

Huntsman, like Mojito, ran poorly to finish down the track in the Jamaica St Leger. Something must have gone wrong for this excellent horse, and he should bounce back with a strong performance in the Derby.
