Mexico, Panama face off in Gold Cup grand finale

Mexico and Panama will battle for the right to be crowned Gold Cup Champions for 2023 on Sunday, July 16. The Mexicans cruised past Jamaica 3-0, while the Panamanians, after some high-quality penalties, prevailed to beat the USA to book their spot in their first final since 2013.

Event # 1 – Gold Cup – Mexico vs Panama – 6:30 PM

Mexico defeated Jamaica 3-0 in their high-profile, semi-final matchup to qualify for their 11th Gold Cup final, and will be seeking their ninth title. Their road to the final was not as difficult as that of their opponents Panama, as they finished atop Group B, beating Honduras 4-0, and Haiti 3-1 before losing 1-0 with a much-changed team to Qatar 1-0 in their final group match. The Mexicans rebounded in style in the knockout rounds, beating Costa Rica 2-0 in the quarter-final and cruising past Jamaica 3-0 in the semi-finals to book their spot in the grand finale.

It was unexpected, but Panama’s win over the USA means they have qualified for their third Gold Cup final (first since 2013) and will be seeking their first Gold Cup title. Indeed, the Panamanians previously appeared in the 2005 final, losing 3-1 in a penalty shootout to the USA. Eight years later, in the 2013 final, Panama again lost 1-0 to the USA. Much like Mexico, Panama finished atop Group C, in which they defeated Costa Rica and Martinique by 2-1 scorelines before ending their group stage with a 2-2 draw against El Salvador. Panama then dismantled Qatar 4-0 in their quarter-final matchup and finally got their revenge against the USA by beating them 5-4 on penalties to book their spot in Sunday’s final.

Key Stats

Panama – Panama haven’t lost in five matches, but they have conceded at least one goal in five consecutive matches, including all four played at this Gold Cup competition so far. They have not kept a clean sheet since mid-October last year.

Both sides – Mexico have not lost to Panama in their last 12 meetings (10W, 2D) — they have won 3 and drawn 2 of their last five matches with Panama in all competitions.
