Jackson, Richardson cross swords in Poland
WORLD Championships and Olympic Games medallist Shericka Jackson and ShaCarri Richardson, fresh from winning their respective national championships last weekend, will meet — for the second time this season — in the women’s 100m during today’s staging of the Wanda Diamond League in Silesia, Poland.
The pair, who are the two fastest women in the world so far, met earlier in the season in Doha, Qatar, in early May, with the American prevailing, but today’s meeting promises fireworks.
Fourteen Jamaicans, including Diamond League debutants Lamara Distin, Tyler Mason, Kishane Thompson and Charokee Young, are down to participate at the meet which is the eighth stop in the Diamond League series.
Jackson ran a personal best and world-leading 10.65 seconds in the final of the Jamaican championships, while Richardson lowered her lifetime best to 10.71 seconds in the first round at the American championships — and they are expected to battle for the win.
A second Jamaican, Sashalee Forbes, will also line up as well as American World Champs relay gold medallist Twanisha Terry, Anthonique Strachan of The Bahamas and Great Britain’s Daryl Neita.
After making his grand appearance with a 9.91-second run in the first round of the men’s 100m at the Jamaican Trials, Thompson will be thrown into the cauldron when he lines up against fellow Diamond League debutant Akeem Blake, the veteran Yohan Blake, as well as World Champion Fred Kirley, American champion Cravont Charleston, and South Africa’s Akani Simbine.
Thompson did not show for the semi-finals last week in Kingston while Akeem Blake, who was a semi-finalist at the World Championships last year, was fourth. Yohan will be seeking to redeem himself after false starting in the first round.
Freshly minted national 100m hurdles champion Megan Tapper and Danielle Williams face a tough field when they go up against World Record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, world number two-ranked Kendra Harrison, and Tia Jones.
Two-time World Championships silver medallists Shanieka Ricketts will resume her battle against double world record holder Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela in the women’s triple jump.
The Cuban pair of Liadagmis Povea and Leyanis Perez Hernandez, as well as Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk of Ukraine, will ensure a quality field.
Candice McLeod, who failed to retain her national title last year, and Charokee Young take on a women’s 400m field that will see Barbados’s Sada Williams, who ran a season’s best 50.80 seconds in Italy on Friday, as well as world number two-ranked Marileids Paulino of the Dominican Republic.
Natoya Goule-Toppin, Jamaican women’s 800m flagbearer, will seek to add to her tally when she lines up against a field led by Kenya’s Mary Moraa.
Distin, who told the Jamaica Observer last week she was working on her approach, will make her first appearance in the Diamond League and faces the likes of world leader Nicola Olyslagers of Australia, Irina Geraashchenko and Yaroslava Mahuchikh of Ukraine, all ranked in the top three in the world.
Tyler Mason, who has had a breakthrough season with two personal best times but just failed to finish in the top three at the Jamaican championships, as well as Damion Thomas, will line up in the 110m hurdles event that will be run in two rounds.
