Bayka faces the fire
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Dancehall artiste Bayka has been charged for using expletives during his performance on Festival Night I of Reggae Sumfest on Friday and the police have served notice that similar charges could also be pending for other entertainers.
“We are looking into preparing summonses for other artistes who used profanity. We are looking into it,” Superintendent of police in charge of operations in the St James Police Division Eron Samuels told the Jamaica Observer.
Reggae Sumfest has been ongoing in the parish with the two major nights of the festival being held at Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre.
“We recognise that [some] persons made their slip up, and we recognise that,” said the officer, noting that there were several infractions.
He, however, added that Bayka, whose given name is Ronaldo Billings, was cited for extreme use of profane language during his performance.
“So he went a bit overboard and so we had to stop him. We couldn’t see it as slip up after a while because of the amount [of expletives]. One particular song basically was constructed using that. So we couldn’t allow him to go further,” Superintendent Samuels explained.
He urged entertainers to desist from using expletives during their sets or face charges.
“We ask persons to understand that, based on the nature of the event, based on the rules explained before, and the laws of the land, we just ask them to conform because we don’t want a situation where we have persons just breaking the law in front of the police whilst we are there in an open environment that is bring streamed and millions of children having access to that.
“We want them to understand that they can perform without using these sort of language, and the event itself is one that requires that they perform without profanities,” he underscored.
The artiste Bayka was reportedly warned during his set that the use of profanity was not allowed.
The authorities indicated to stage emcee Pretty Boy Floyd that if the artiste did not desist from further expletives they would act.
Patrons looked on as the police whisked Bayka away after his performance was cut short.
Pretty Boy Floyd would earn the wrath of a section of the audience, who jeered him for disrupting the deejay’s energetic performance.
He later told fans that the police had been lenient with the entertainer.
