Jamaica bag 10 more medals on day two of NACAC
SAN JOSE, Costa Rica— Jamaica added 10 more medals on Saturday’s second day of the NACAC Under 18/23 Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Team Jamaica won four gold, four silver and two bronze medals as they took their overall tally to 24, second overall to the United States.
Daniel Wright, in the Under 18 boys 110m hurdles; D’Andre Anderson, in the Under 23 men’s 400m; Chavez Penn, in the Under 18 boys high jump; and the Under 23 men’s 4x100m relay team all mined gold medals.
Jamaica took the gold and silver in the Under 18 110m hurdles as Wright ran a personal best 13.31 seconds (-0.4m/s) to edge Kaheim Carby, who also had a lifetime best 13.34 seconds with Cuba’s Yander Luis Herrera Machin taking third in 13.41 seconds.
Jaheem Hayles was fourth in the men’s Under 23 110m hurdles.
Anderson ran 45.56 seconds to win the senior men’s 400m, beating Barbados’ Kyle Gale (45.80 seconds) and William Jones of the USA, who took the bronze in 45.95 seconds. Reheem Hyles was fifth with 46.69 seconds.
Penn equalled his personal best 2.10m to take gold in the Under 18 high jump, beating Cayman Islands’ Andrew Stone, who was second 2.07m, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Jaidi Jame who came third with 1.95m.
The team of Jehlani Gordon, Adrian Kerr, Travis Williams and Shakur Williams ran 39.04 seconds to win the Under 23 sprint relay gold, beating the Bahamas, who ran 39.59 seconds for second and USA, who were third with 39.62 seconds.
Crystal Morrison, who was fourth in the Pan-Am Under 20 at the same venue in 2019, made up with a silver in the Under 23 100m hurdles, running 12.81 seconds (-0.2m/s) behind American Rayniah Jones, who clocked 12.78 seconds for first while another American, Destiny Huven, took third with 13.19 seconds.
The Under 18 men and Under 23 women’s 4x100m relay teams also earned silver medals; the boys’ team of Kahiem Carby, Trevoy Smith, Ainsley McGregor and Joshua Wint, ran 41.18 seconds for second, just ahead of the Bahamas’ 41.19 seconds as Trinidad won with 41.14 seconds for a Caribbean podium.
The women’s team of Morrison, Shaquena Foote, Niesha Burgher and Shana Anderson took second with 43.80 seconds as the USA set a new Championship Record 42.74 seconds with Trinidad third in 43.50 seconds.
Anderson won a bronze of her own in the Under 23 400m where she ran 52.27 seconds as American Jermaisha Arnold, with a Championship Record 50.68 seconds, broke Jamaican Chrisann Gordon’s 51.02 seconds set in 2016. Ziyah Holman of the USA was also under the old record with 50.95 seconds for the silver while Joanne Reid was fourth in 54.10 seconds.
Jordan Turner took the bronze in the Under 23 men’s long jump with 7.82m (-0.4m/s) as Americans Malcolm Clemons won the gold with 8.21m (0.5m/s) and Jeremiah Davis was second with a wind-aided 8.10m (2.3m/s). Kavian Kerr was fifth with a wind-aided 7.69m (2.7m/s).
