Ten killed in road crashes last week – RSU
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Ten people, including four private motor car drivers and three motorcyclists, died as a result of motor vehicle crashes during the week ending Friday, July 28.
The Road Safety Unit (RSU) released the figures on Friday as part of its regular update on road crashes.
The statistics also revealed that up to July 28, a total of 230 people had been killed in 212 fatal crashes so far this year.
The figures represent a 16 per cent decrease in fatal crashes and a 20 per cent decline in fatalities when compared to the corresponding period in 2022 the RSU said.
It also indicated that the projection was for a seven per cent decrease in fatalities as at the second quarter of this year.
Of concern for the RSU is that pedestrians account for 23 per cent of the road users killed as of July 28, 2023.
At the same time, motorcyclists account for 32 per cent; private motor vehicle drivers account for 16 per cent, and private motor vehicle passengers account for seven per cent of all road fatalities this year.
The group of road users deemed most vulnerable (pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion riders) account for 65 per cent combined of the road users killed on the nation’s roads this year.
Meanwhile, males and females account for 90 per cent and 10 per cent, respectively, of the road fatalities as of July 28, 2023.
