Reggae artiste Capleton says he is willing to play his part to provide support for the Reggae Girlz.
The entertainer made this remark before leaving for Europe on Wednesday afternoon, following the Girlz’s draw against Brazil that made them qualify for the round of 16 at the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
“When the Reggae Girlz were on a promotional tour in Jamaica, my publicist Contractor took me for a meet and greet with them at Dunn’s River Falls a few years ago. I had a photo session with them as well as I performed for them. I have my charity show [called] St Mary Mi Come From and I’m willing to donate more to the Reggae Girlz because sports and music are the life force of our people,” Capleton told the Jamaica Observer.
Jamaica held Brazil to a 0-0 draw and advanced to the round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup for the first time.
After conceding 12 goals in its Women’s World Cup debut in 2019, Jamaica shut out France, Panama and Brazil in consecutive games to book an improbable place in the tournament’s knockout stage.
It’s the first time since 1995 that Brazil has failed to advance out of the group stage.
In the meantime, Capleton said Wednesday morning’s match yielded the expected results.
“I got what I expected because I expected a draw. They defended well, and the defensive unit is very good and we went into the game with strong determination and confidence,” he said.
The entertainer further added that he is an avid supporter of the Girlz.
“I always watch the matches on TV from wherever I am in the world, and no matter the hours,” he said.
The veteran artiste is nudging the Government and corporate Jamaica to assess how they can show their support for the team, especially after such a historic feat.
“For more sponsorship, the Reggae Girlz are doing what they need to do, and that is win on the biggest levels. And now they are the first Caribbean team to make it to the second round of the Women’s World Cup. So, corporate Jamaica and the Government should put more sponsorship into the Reggae Girlz,” Capleton said.
Real name Clifton Bailey, Capleton exploded out of St Mary in the late 1980s with hard-hitting dancehall songs like No Lotion Man. In the 1990s his life and music became more spiritual, which can be heard on anthems such as Tour, Wings of The Morning, and Jah Jah City.
