St James Municipal Corporation expresses regret at passing of former councillor
ST JAMES, Jamaica— The St James Municipal Corporation has expressed regret over the recent passing of former People’s National Party (PNP) Councillor for the Welcome Hall Division, Phylene Muirhead-Wilson.
Muirhead-Wilson, who represented the Division from 1998 to 2003, passed away on August 6.
Deputy mayor of Montego Bay, Councillor Richard Vernon said the parish of St James has lost a true community stalwart; someone whose work as a Councillor at the then St James parish Council touched everyone regardless of their political connections.
“From information that I have received, former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson was a hard worker who was passionate about serving the people, not just those from the Welcome Hall Division, but across the parish. It is my understanding that she literally lived a life of service which culminated with her being elected Councillor for the Welcome Hall Division where she gave service of the highest level,” Councillor Vernon said.
The Deputy Mayor, in expressing condolences to former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson’s children Heather, Suzette and Miguel, said the work, worth and memory of the former Councillor will live on and that those who were close to her can take comfort in the fact that she was a great servant of the people.
Meanwhile, Minority leader at the St James Municipal Corporation, Councillor Michael Troupe of the Granville Division, said he had the privilege of serving with former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson and they shared a vision of building a better St James-using the then St James Parish council as the driving force.
“The death of former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson has left a gaping void in the parish of St James which will not be easily filled. Former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson was widely regarded as a hard worker, someone who never had can’t or no in her vocabulary. The Welcome Hall Division, the constituency of St James Southern and the parish of St James have lost a true servant and a great daughter of the soil,” Councillor Troupe said.
He added” “I want to thank former Councillor Muirhead-Wilson for her contributions and the high level of dedication and commitment with which she conducted the affairs of the Welcome Hall Division and the parish of St James in general. I know her soul will rest in peace and I want to express heartfelt condolences to her children, family members and close friends.”
