#WorldChamps2023: Clayton, Russell, Knight cruise into 400m hurdles semis
Day three of the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary began with all three Jamaicans safely securing their spot for Tuesday’s semi-final round of the women’s 400m hurdles.
Rushell Clayton, who is a silver medal winner from four years ago, leads the Jamaican qualifiers campaign as she won heat one in a time of 53.97 seconds. She crossed the line ahead of two-time world champion Dalilah Muhammad of America (54.21), Carolina Krafzik of Germany (54.53) and Finland’s Viivi Lehikoinen (54.65).
Multiple national champion Janieve Russell cruised to victory in heat two, clocking a time of 54.53 seconds. America’s Anna Cockrell finished second in 54.68, while Gianna Woodruff of Panama (55.31) and Canada’s Savannah Sutherland (55.85) placed third and fourth, respectively.
Andrenette Knight, who made her debut at the Championships, eased into second in heat three to qualify in a time of 54.21. Bahrain’s Kemi Adekoya produced an area record to win in 53.56, while Italy’s Ayomide Folorunso (54.30) and Cathelijn Peeters of the Netherlands (54.95) claimed the other two qualification spots.
All three women will contest the next round of the 400m hurdles on Tuesday at 1:25 pm Jamaica time.
