How do you see the women’s 400m hurdles final playing out?
Based on their semi-final performances the Jamaican ladies stand a reasonable chance of medalling. Rushell Clayton has certainly thrown her hat into the medal ring. If she replicates that semi-final run she should be on the podium, just as she was in 2019 in Doha. Andrenette Knight is fresh on the scene at this level and could look to be a spoiler as well. While not having a strong run in the semis Janieve Russell is familiar with the big stage, even though this will be only her second time in a World Champs final over 400mH; and if she gets it right she may very well get that elusive, individual global medal.
Femke Bol should win the gold medal going away but after that, any card can play — and Jamaica is firmly in the game. Rushell Clayton should lead the Jamaican charge for a medal after her personal best of 53.30 seconds in the semi-finals. The challenge to the Jamaican medal hopes should come from Shamier Little and Kemi Adekoya but I am confident that the Jamaican girls will pick up at least one medal. My call for the final would be Femke Bol, Shamier Little, and Rushell Clayton for the top three places.
My expectations are the same as before the start of the championships: I think we can grab a medal in this event. Now, it seems like the women can likely grab two if their execution goes according to plan. Rushell, Janieve, and Andrenette have managed the two rounds well, despite some shuffling and stretching over the hurdles, but having all three in the final is a huge success for us. We saw Rushell Clayton’s personal-best run in her semi-final ,and that too is encouraging. However, the 400m hurdles field led by Femke Bol of Netherlands is competitive and it will be a tough task, but very achievable for our women.
It is a hurdles event. There are 10 barriers so anything can happen but, all things being equal, Femke Bol should run away with this one. She is several steps ahead of everyone else. The other two medals are fair game. Rushell Clayton and Janieve Russell are experienced at this level and Andrenette Knight has shown that she belongs. All three have been impressive in their approach but I believe Rushell, the 2019 bronze medal winner, has shown a little more than her teammates. Shamier Little can spoil the party but I do believe that Jamaica will win at least one medal in this one. There is very little [difference] between the Jamaicans, and it will come down to heart and execution. Russell and Clayton for the podium alongside runaway winner, Bol.
