#WorldChamps2023: Nugent, Williams advance, Tapper misses out on 100m hurdles final
Ackera Nugent and Danielle Williams will be the Jamaican representatives in the final of the women’s 100m hurdles at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships.
Nugent kept her World Championships hopes alive after recording a time of 12.60 seconds to advance to her first global final. World record holder Tobi Amusan of Nigeria claimed the top spot in 12.56 seconds.
Williams was rewarded with a place in the gold medal race after finishing third in a season’s best of 12.50 seconds in semi-final three. Reigning Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn won in 12.41 while America’s Nia Ali clocked 12.49 for second.
After awaiting her fate in the ‘q’ room, Tapper, who is the only Jamaican woman to win an Olympic medal in the event, finished fourth in 12.55 seconds in semi-final one. Her time was not enough to make it to the next round.
Meanwhile, Kendra Harrison of America won in 12.33 seconds while Bahamian national record holder Devynne Charlton copped the second spot in a time of 12.49.
Ditaji Kambundji of Switzerland is the other non-automatic qualifier with a time of 12.50.
The final of the women’s 100m hurdles is scheduled for Friday at 2:25 pm Jamaica time.
