Thomas-Dodd not disappointed despite fifth-place finish
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Danniel Thomas-Dodd got off to a good start but had to settle for fifth place in the women’s shot put on Saturday’s penultimate session of the World Athletics Championships at the National Athletics Center in Budapest, Hungary, with a best throw of 19.59m.
Despite not adding to her silver medal won in 2019 in Doha, Qatar, Thomas-Dodd, who was in her third final in five World Championships, said while there were some aspects of disappointment, she was overall happy with the event that had the preliminaries in the morning and finals later in the day.
American Chase defended her title with a season’s best 20.43m, followed by Canada’s Sarah Mitton, who took the silver with 20.08m, also her best this season, with China’s Lijiao Gong taking bronze, with 19.69m, same mark as Portugal’s Auriol Dongmo.
Thomas-Dodd was in third place after the first round, with 19.38m, but said she was not bothered by Ealey’s opening 20.35m effort, “I knew what I had in the tank and was just hoping that I could get one big throw based on what I was seeing in practice.”
The former Commonwealth Games champion had mixed feelings.
“Overall, I am not disappointed with my performance — three finals out of five World Championships — but I am a bit disappointed in myself knowing what I needed to do and what it would take to get among the medals, but I could not get it together,” she said.
Thomas-Dodd, who struggled through injuries to her back and feet the last two years, said, “I knew there was a big throw there, but it’s a hard double to do, morning and evening, but I am super excited for the ladies who came out and put it together, knowing how hard it is.”
