JFF admits that chase for Greenwood still on
President of the Jamaica Football Association (JFF) Michael Ricketts said he has not given up chase of discarded England striker Mason Greenwood.
Ricketts told the Jamaica Observer that Greenwood is someone that the JFF has been eyeing for sometime and every attempt will be made to secure his services for the future.
“The answer is he is available, but we have not made any contact,” said Ricketts. “In fact, I have a meeting with the coach and he will update me because I have been away for a few weeks.
“But I know there have been some players who have been showing interest and the coach was in England, but there could very well be the possibility [of Greenwood joining],” Ricketts pointed out.
The JFF boss added, “He is an excellent player and he would certainly add a lot of quality to the Reggae Boyz team.
Greenwood’s club, Manchester United, announced earlier this month the striker will not be continuing his career at the club following the conclusion of a six-month internal investigation.
He has been suspended by the club since his arrest for alleged sexual assault and domestic violence in January 2022. He was charged in October, although those charges were dropped after the withdrawal of the key witnesses and the introduction of new evidence.
Greenwood is eligible to play for Jamaica despite having already played in one competitive game for England as the FIFA rules will allow for him to switch from next month, once he agrees to join the Reggae Boyz team.
The 21-year-old Greenwood scored 22 goals for Manchester United in 83 appearances since making his debut for the club in 2018.
