Increased security and surveillance on May Pen to Williamsfield highway – NROCC

MANCHESTER, Jamaica — The National Road Operating & Constructing Company Limited (NROCC) says security and surveillance have been increased on the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of Highway 2000.

In a statement Wednesday morning, NROCC — which is responsible for overseeing the design, construction and maintenance of Jamaica’s highways — said it takes note of articles about the May Pen to Williamsfield Highway published in the Jamaica Observer.

On Wednesday, the Observer published a story “Danger lurks on new leg of Highway 2000” regarding stray animals and motorists driving on the wrong side of the highway adding to mounting concerns over safety on the high-speed road.

NROCC said the highway construction contractor, China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), is currently addressing areas of vulnerability in the right-of-way fencing.

“Surveillance exercises along the May Pen to Williamsfield leg of the highway have been significantly ramped up as well, so that any further breaches can be quickly identified and addressed,” a statement from NROCC read in part.

“The Jamaica Observer article alluded to the theft of fencing and material used for fencing. This is an ongoing challenge on all sections of the highway network. The agency pleads with persons to refrain from doing this. We continue to work with the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) on this matter,” the statement continued.

NROCC said it has also received footage of motorists driving on the wrong side of the roadway.

“The JCF has been alerted to these breaches and they have put measures in place to address the issue. The JCF has also indicated that they have increased their overall presence on the May Pen to Williamsfield Highway to address other breaches, including speeding on the highway. They have indicated that a number of tickets have already been issued,” NROCC said.

NROCC is encouraging motorists to drive safely on the highway.

“One crash has been reported which was due to a heavily ladened vehicle sustaining a blown tire. No injuries were reported,” the statement read in part.
