WESTMORELAND, Jamaica— Family members of Romario Dawkins, one of the two men who were fatally shot by the police in Spring Garden, Westmoreland on Wednesday afternoon, are professing his innocence.

Dawkins’ brother told Observer Online that his brother has a limp and is no violence producer.

“[He is] no gunman, no badness, nothing at all. Di man foot bruk up, he can’t even run to do badness. One a him foot bruk off, so he walks with a limp,” the brother said of Dawkins.

The brother, who wish not to be named, said Dawkins was assisting his friend Dean Woolery— who was also shot and killed— to transport some materials to build his house when the incident happened.

He is hoping to get justice for his brother.

Dawkins’ grandaunt Paulette Balls is also seeking answers.

Balls said that she wants to know why her grand-nephew was killed by the police.

“Mi wudda wah know what right dem have to shoot him. What did he do for them to shoot him?” Balls questioned.

Balls has also refuted the claim from the police that there was a confrontation and firearms were seized.

“It was no shootout, no shootout!”

According to Zone Four commander for Little London and Negril Deputy Superintendent of Police Shaunjaye Mitchell the men died in a confrontation with the lawmen.

“There was a police operation in the area sometime about 12:30pm and the operation resulted in a confrontation and two men were shot and taken to the hospital where they were pronounced dead,” DSP Mitchell reported.
