Vincentian soca artiste Skinny Fabulous was excited to be back on Jamaican soil for the second staging of the Soca+ Festival at Sabina Park in Kingston between Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“When it’s nice, you do it twice. I think this is a very ambitious undertaking. With the first one, it was out of season, so there was an ambition in that regard. And this one is a whole new ambition with the amount of time that they gave people to party,” he told the Jamaica Observer on Sunday morning before he hit the stage.

The artiste went on to deliver an energetic set which eventually saw him venturing into the crowd to interact with his fans.

He explains that his longevity in the industry is owed to his insatiable desire to keep improving.

“For one, Jesus likes me…me and Jesus close. The second thing is hunger; I’m never full. I’m never satisfied, I’m never content with where I am… I feel I could always be and do better or more, and I don’t get comfortable at all. Even right now, with one of the biggest songs for the season, I’m not comfortable, because I’m still looking at 2024 and 2025, so comfort I think is that one factor that allows people to fail. I don’t get comfortable,” he explained.

The singer, whose real name is Gamal Doyle, is a five-time Soca Monarch winner for his home country, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and created history in Trinidad and Tobago winning the 2019 Road March title with his hit Famalay, which features Bunji Garlin and Machel Montano.

Skinny Fabulous also took the opportunity to express gratitude to his Jamaican supporters who have shown their loyalty over the years.

“For the people in Jamaica who support the vibes, it’s not just about support for me, but the art form, the industry, the music, it’s the culture, and it’s a matter of just being appreciative because Jamaica could’ve been a closed-door society and Jamaica has proven otherwise. I love the fact that they embrace soca, they embrace me as an artiste, so I just give thanks,” he said.
