Coach Gayle wants more despite STGC’s 8th-straight win
FORMER champions St George’s College (STGC) recorded their eighth-straight victory in this year’s Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association Manning Cup football competition with a hard-fought 1-0 triumph over Waterford High at Winchester Park on Friday.
Adrian Reid netted the all-important goal for the Neville Bertis-coached STGC in the fourth minute of the game.
The victory moved STGC, who have already qualified for the second round, to 24 points in Zone F.
They are followed by Campion College on 19 points, Jose Marti Technical (12), Waterford (10), Ardenne High (four) and Pembroke Hall (one).
Reid, who is a national junior representative, hit the game’s lone goal from the penalty spot. This after Matthew Spence was brought down inside the 18-yard box by a Waterford defender.
Marcel Gayle, the assistant coach of St George’s, said while he is happy for the victory, he noted that his team should have won the game by a wider margin.
“It was a good victory because our Captain Adrian Reid scored from the penalty spot for us and so I am happy about that,” said Gayle.
“However, I think that we could have scored a lot more goals but faulty shooting from the attackers resulted in us failing to score a lot more goals in the match,” he assessed.
Meanwhile, Excelsior High cemented their place in the second round of the competition with a 3-1 victory over Bridgeport in Zone D at the Courtney Walsh Oval. The victory moved Excelsior to 18 points, six behind runaway leaders St Andrew Technical who are perfect on 24 points. Excelsior, however, have a game in hand.
Bridgeport High are third in the zone on 12 points, followed by Clan Carthy High (nine), Tarrant High (three), and Cedar Grove Academy (zero).
