MORANT BAY, St Thomas — Mayor of Morant Bay Councillor Hubert Williams (People’s National Party, White Horses Division) has promised to find a solution to the traffic snarls plaguing St Thomas because of the deplorable state of the Lyssons main road.

“It’s truly a shame…practically, there’s no usable road. And just the other night, I witnessed examiners seizing vehicles in such conditions,” Williams bemoaned.

“We urgently need to address this situation. It’s a disgrace! The people are really suffering from that end of the parish,” he added.

Williams noted that the current state of the road significantly hampers both production and productivity as commuters spend an excessive amount of time stuck in traffic.

The mayor assured the council that he would be pushing to have the issue addressed.

In weighing in on the issue, Councillor Rohan Bryan (People’s National Party, Morant Bay Division) argued that the State-run National Water Commission (NWC) has contributed to the horrible condition of the roads.

In making their repairs, he said, the NWC often digs up sections that are already paved.

He noted that the most problematic section of the road is just below the Princess Margaret Hospital, where severe traffic jams frequently occur. Bryan noted that this poses a potential threat to ambulances trying to navigate the road when responding to emergencies.

“We’ve endured this for far too long. It’s time we consider hiring more capable contractors to rectify this situation,” he urged.
