Canada: Second-best country in the world
Dear Mr Brown,
I have been hearing a lot about the hardships in Canada on social media lately. I am wondering if Canada is still the best place for me to migrate to. I know that inflation is affecting all countries, but it seems that Canada is having a particularly bad time. Please share your thoughts.

Dear TW:
I acknowledge the post-pandemic inflation has been high in Canada and had caused exceptional hardship. Taxes are very high in Canada. As such, the rise in mortgage rates and rent and groceries has had a significant impact. The economy has remained relatively stable with low unemployment. However, it should also be acknowledged that Canada has been ranked as the second-best country in the world in 2023, according to a new ranking conducted by US News & World Report.
The study identified a set of 73 country attributes, which are terms that can be used to describe a country and are relevant to a modern nation’s success. These attributes were included in a survey conducted from March 17 to June 12, involving over 17,000 participants from around the world. The participants were asked to evaluate whether they associated specific attributes with particular countries.
Attributes
Each country received a score for each of the 73 attributes based on the collective responses from the survey. The higher a country was perceived to embody a certain characteristic compared to the average, the higher its attribute score, and vice versa. These scores were then transformed into a standardised scale for comparison purposes.
Sub-rankings
These attributes were categorised into 10 thematic sub-rankings that contributed to the overall best countries rankings, such as: quality of life, entrepreneurship, agility, and social purpose.
Quality of Life refers to: A good job market, affordability, economical stability, income equality, politically stability, safety, well-developed public education system, well-developed public health system, etc.
Entrepreneurship refers to: Connectivity to the rest of the world, educated population, entrepreneurial, innovative, provides easy access to capital, skilled labour force, technological expertise, transparent business practices, well-developed infrastructure, well-developed digital infrastructure, well-developed legal framework, etc.
Agility refers to: adaptability, modernity, progressiveness, responsiveness, etc.
Social Purpose refers to: human rights, environment, gender equality, religious freedom, respect for property rights, trustworthiness, well-distributed political power, racial equity, animal rights, commitment to climate goals, committed to social justice, etc.
Switzerland was deemed the best country in the world in 2023. By comparison, the United States, holds the fifth position.
Other Sub-rankings
Canada also ranked among the top seven nations across the world in the following ways:
Second Best Country
• To start a career
• For racial equality
• To headquarter a corporation
Fourth Best Country
•For education
Sixth Best Country
• For women
• For comfortable retirement
• For most transparent country
Seventh Best Country:
• For studying abroad
• For raising children
Many countries are dealing with higher interest rates to cool inflation and the economy. Hopefully, this can result in a soft-landing without a major recession.
