MUMBAI, India, (AFP) — South Africa’s Quinton de Kock made his third hundred in just five World Cup innings with a brilliant 174 against Bangladesh in Mumbai on Tuesday.

The 30-year-old left-handed opener went to his latest century in 101 balls, including six fours and four sixes.

South Africa had briefly been in trouble at 36-2 after winning the toss at the Wankhede Stadium.

But De Kock’s third-wicket stand of 131 with stand-in captain Aiden Markram (60) turned the tide in favour of the Proteas.

He then put on 142 for the fourth wicket with Heinrich Klaasen as South Africa sailed past 300.

De Kock, in what he has said will be his last major one-day international tournament, was on course to become just the third batsman to score a World Cup double century when he sliced Hasan Mahmud to deep backward point.

In all, he faced 140 balls including 15 fours and seven sixes.

De Kock’s latest century followed scores of 100 and 109 during South Africa’s opening two matches against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively.

It was also his 20th hundred in 150 one-day internationals.

South Africa have won three of their opening four World Cup matches, with the only blot on their record a shock loss to non-Test side the Netherlands.

Bangladesh, by contrast, are struggling to qualify for the semi-finals following three defeats in four games.
