Clarendon College, BB Coke lead quarter-final hopefuls
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Despite losing their season’s perfect win record, defending champions Clarendon College and surprise package BB Coke led the qualifiers for the quarter-finals of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition after Saturday’s final round of matches in the round of 16.
Clarendon College trailed Cornwall College 1-0 at half-time in their game at Glenmuir High but rallied for a draw that saw both schools advance from Group 1.
BB Coke ended their round of 16 fixture with a 4-0 win over first-time qualifiers Tacky High at Drax Hall, wining all three games to win Group 2 with maximum nine points.
Former champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) were the only surprise in not advancing after they were held goalless by out-of-contention Mile Gully High at Brooks Park and were edged on goal difference by Cornwall College after both schools ended on four points each.
The quarter-final groups are Group A — Clarendon College, Glenmuir High, Manchester High and Christiana High, while Group B will see BB Coke High, Dinthill Technical, Cornwall College, and Garvey Maceo High.
At Glenmuir High, Lincoln Cox gave Cornwall College a first half lead, but Keheim Dixon’s second-half equaliser saw both teams sharing the points as Clarendon College’s run of 12 straight wins came to an end.
Clarendon College won the group with seven points after they had won their two previous outings.
Jahmaul Wright scored a double for BB Coke as they had it easy with Tacky, who were losing their third straight in this round with Semar Williams and Sanjay Allen also scoring.
Glenmuir High beat Frome Technical High 2-1 to take Group 4 honours on goal difference over Garvey Maceo, who were 4-1 winners over Port Antonio High at Carder Park, both finishing on seven points.
Kyle Gordon and Oneil Headley scored for Glenmuir High, who ended with a plus-six goal difference.
Cleo Clarke scored a double for Garvey Maceo High, scoring in the 10th and 31st minutes, while Rakeesh Jones scored in the 46th minute and Everald Swaby in the 52nd minute.
Keroe George scored an 85th-minute consolation for Port Antonio High.
Davonie Daley and Nickoy Henry scored for Christiana High in their 2-0 win over McGrath High to finish second in Group 3 to Dinthill Technical, who were 2-1 winners over William Knibb Memorial in their weather-affected game at Dinthill Technical.
Manchester High rebounded from their first loss of the season to BB Coke on Wednesday to beat Happy Grove High 2-0 in Mandeville and get second place in Group 2.
