Reggae Boy Lowe’s goal in vain as 10-man Swansea bow to Ipswich
LONDON, England (CMC) — Reggae Boy Jamal Lowe’s fourth goal of the season — but first in over a month — was not enough to prevent 10-man Swansea City from a 3-2 defeat at Ipswich here Saturday.
The 29-year-old netted deep in stoppage time at the end with a brilliant individual effort but the strike came too late as the Swans fell to their third Championship defeat in five games.
Lowe had earlier provided the assist for Jay Fulton whose glancing seventh-minute header from close range put the visitors ahead at Portman Road.
However, Ipswich remained composed and took the lead after Jack Taylor (17th) and Conor Chaplin (22nd) scored in the space of six minutes.
The hosts then added a third seven minutes after the break when Harrison Ashby brought down Taylor just inside the box and George Hirst fired the resulting penalty straight down the middle.
Swansea, who lost Liam Cullen to a second yellow in the 69th, found their second in the fifth of nine minutes of added time, Lowe beating two defenders on the left with a mazy run into the box before also rounding goalkeeper Vaclav Hladky to finish with aplomb from close range.
The Swans lie 17th on 19 points while Ipswich are joint top of the league with Leicester on 39 points.
In the National League, there were goals for Grenada international Kairo Mitchell and Bermuda international Justin Donawa, but the duo experienced contrasting fortunes.
Playing at Grosvenor Vale Stadium in west London, the 26-year-old Mitchell banged in his eighth goal of the campaign but visiting Rochdale squandered two leads to lose 3-2 to Wealdstone.
It was Mitchell who opened the scoring in the 10th minute when he raced onto the end of a through ball and slotted past goalkeeper Jed Ward.
Jack Cook levelled in stoppage before the break with the first of a brace before Ryan East finished from close range following the resumption to restore Rochdale’s lead.
However, Sean Adarkwa levelled moments later before Cook found the winner in the fifth minute of stoppage at the end.
Rochdale’s defeat was their seventh of the season, leaving them ninth on 24 points, while Wealdsone are one point behind in 12th following their sixth victory.
At Moss Lane in the north-west, the 27-year-old Donawa scored his third of the season as Altrincham beat Southend United 2-0 to extend their unbeaten league streak to 10 games and go fifth in the standings on 32 points.
Following a goalless first half, Justin Amaluzor put the hosts ahead in the 57th with a close-range finish before Donawa added the second in the 88th.
