Man found dead in cell hours after complaint made against him by wife
GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – Police in Guyana say a 56-year-old man, who had been arrested on Sunday following a “damning report made against him by his 32-year-old wife”, was found dead in his cell.
Lloyd David, a mason, had been placed in the cell at the Providence Police Station with two other persons.
Lawmen say he was arrested following a report from his wife that included the alleged attempted rape of a minor.
“A few minutes later, he assaulted one of the arrested persons, who had to be sent for medical attention. Due to his violent behaviour, he was placed in a separate cell (by himself). About 30 minutes later, the person in the neighbouring cell shouted that David had committed suicide,” the police said in a statement.
They said that emergency medical personnel were summoned and found that David had no pulse. No other marks of violence were reportedly seen on the exposed parts of his body.
The police said as a result of the death, the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) is now investigating the matter.
