Bailey frustrated by VAR as Villa held
LONDON, England (CMC) – Reggae Boy Leon Bailey had a second-half goal ruled out as Aston Villa missed out on the chance to go top of the Premier League when they were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw by relegation threatened Sheffield United.
The 26-year-old netted what he thought was the opener in the 61st minute at Villa Park on Friday night when he finished clinically from Ollie Watkins’s low cross.
However, the goal was chalked off after VAR ruled that Jacob Ramsey had fouled Sheffield United gloveman West Foderingham on the corner, in the build-up to the goal.
Ironically Cameron Archer, who qualifies to represent Jamaica and who departed Villa for Sheffield in the summer window, then stunned the hosts with a close-range finish in the 87th minute.
The goal seemed set to end Villa’s impressive unbeaten run until substitute Nicolo Zaniolo headed home the equaliser deep in stoppage time.
The stalemate ended Villa’s hopes of spending Christmas at the top of the Premier League for the first time in a quarter of a century, and they now lie second on goal difference to Arsenal on 39 points.
Bailey has played a key role in Villa’s form which had seen them rack up 15 successive home wins in the league before Friday’s result, scoring five league goals and adding five assists.
He has scored eight goals overall this season.
