Neita Garvey urges immediate action for swift, comprehensive garbage collection
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Addressing the pressing issue of solid waste affecting numerous communities and business hubs across Jamaica, Natalie Neita Garvey, Shadow Minister on Local Government, has called for urgent measures to combat the disgraceful pile-up.
In a release on Monday, Neita Garvey expressed grave concern over the escalating pile-up of waste. Emphasising the immediate need for a comprehensive plan of action and highlighting the imminent health hazards posed by the accumulation of rotting garbage, she urged Minister of Local Government Desmond McKenzie to take swift action.
“Communities and business districts are grappling with an alarming accumulation of waste that poses a clear and present danger to public health,” Neita Garvey said.
Highlighting the distressing situation in the downtown Kingston market district, which falls within Minister McKenzie’s political constituency, Neita Garvey condemned recent media images as nothing short of disgraceful. She went on to shed light on the dire circumstances in rural areas where waste collection has been neglected for over a year.
Expressing disappointment in the National Solid Waste Management Authority’s (NSWMA) performance despite recent additions to its fleet, Neita Garvey stressed the urgent need for proactive measures. She called upon both the NSWMA Board and the Minister to take decisive action to ensure the proper collection and disposal of solid waste in line with the Authority’s mandate.
“It’s imperative for the NSWMA and responsible authorities to promptly address this crisis and fulfil their duty in waste management,” Neita Garvey concluded.
