Pluto Shervington has died
Singer Pluto Shervington, whose 1976 hit song ‘I Man Born Ya’, summed-up Jamaica’s tense political climate, died in Miami, Florida on Friday at age 73.
Fellow singer Ernie Smith, who knew Shervington for more than 50 years, confirmed his death in an interview with Observer Online.
Shervington migrated to South Florida one year after ‘I Man Born Ya’ topped charts in Jamaica. The single referenced socialist Prime Minister Michael Manley’s infamous “five flights to Miami” speech which opponents took as an order for his detractors to leave the country.
‘I Man Born Ya’ was recorded at Federal Records, owned by the Khouri family. Smith and Shervington were two of that company’s marquee acts, scoring with a series of easy-listening songs like ‘Life Is Just For Living’, ‘Duppy Gunman’, ‘Your Honour’ and ‘Dat’.
