Relegation-threatened Molynes hunt Humble Lion
In their bid to steer clear of the relegation zone, Molynes United will be looking for maximum points when they do battle with Humble Lion in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League at Stadium East in Kingston on Sunday at 3:30 pm.
Molynes is 11th on 11 points, just four points above the drop zone. The club has suffered eight defeats in their 15 matches this season and have the worst defensive record, with 26 goals conceded and four of those coming in their recent defeat by Arnett Gardens.
However, Head Coach Jermaine Thomas is optimistic that they can win after seeing some of their recent performances.
“We have been looking better, but it comes down to consistency,” he said. “We’ve been doing a lot of things right, but we’ve been making some silly mistakes and we’ve been punished for them. We want a good result, we want three points but football is played for 90 minutes and it comes down to a couple factors: who wants it more, who is prepared to make the least amount of mistakes, and how fast can we organise to prevent goals from being scored.
“Humble Lion is a very rugged, rough team. They would have been making changes in the last couple of weeks, brought in fresh blood, but we are up to whatever challenge there is and the onus will be on us to go out there and get the desired result to ensure we can get some points from this game.”
Prior to the start of the second round Humble Lion was seven points outside the relegation zone, but after a win and a draw in the last two games is now 10th on 18 points, just four points off a play-off spot.
The recent results have impressed Head Coach Vassell Reynolds and he’s hoping the Clarendon-based club can continue climbing the table.
“I think over the past couple of weeks the confidence of the team would have grown and been boosted by that draw against a very good Dunbeholden team,” Reynolds said. “It was a gutsy performance. We would have set out to go on a run of four or five unbeaten games and especially focusing on trying to prevent conceding in the past. I think, so far, two games, two clean sheets, so that’s a plus for us, so it’s a morale booster and we are just looking to continue to improve.
“No games are easy at this stage of the competition [so] we know this is another challenge. We recognise we need to continue to improve, get points on the board. Of course, this one is another game we look to add another three points to the tally, hopefully we’ll get a positive result, but I’m pretty satisfied we’re up to the task and we’ll give a good performance.”
