Reggae Youths need one point to advance to Major League semi-final
ST JAMES, Jamaica— Defending champions Reggae Youths will need only one point to confirm their place in the semi-finals of the St James Football Association/Sandals Resorts International Major League when they take on Montego Bay Boys Club in their return round Zone B game at the UDC Field on Friday.
Reggae Youths have won all five games played so far and lead Zone B with 15 points, three more than Cambridge United. A win Friday would see them join early qualifiers Flanker United in the semi-finals.
Reggae Youths had beaten Montego Bay Boys Club 9-1 in their first round game and should get past the former champions and secure their semi-final place.
Flanker United were the first qualifiers for the semi-finals after blanking Heights FC 2-0 in their return round Zone A game played at the UDC field Thursday.
Cambridge United rebounded from their loss to Irwin United last week to beat Lilliput Rovers 2-1, despite ending the game with 10 men, and took over second place in Zone B with 12 points.
Flanker United finished the game with 10 players after Tajay Blake was shown a second yellow card and was sent off early in the second half.
An own goal in the eighth minute gave Flanker United the lead on Thursday and Jermaine Irving added a second goal in the 17th minute, his fourth of the season.
Cambridge United beat Lilliput Rovers for the second time this season after winning the first game between the teams 3-2 and strengthening their chances of getting a spot in the semi-finals.
O’Brian Bent gave Cambridge United the lead in the 23rd minute but Lilliput Rovers equalised in the 33rd minute when Dave-Roy Bailey scored his second goal of the season.
Romario Lewis scored the winner for Cambridge United in the 58th minute.
Courtney Tomlinson of Cambridge United was sent off after he was shown a second yellow card in the game.
