Teflon Don catches the eye in debut win
Teflon Don, a three-year-old bay colt, began his campaign for the forthcoming Classic series of races with a noticeable victory in the Mercury Sprint on Saturday, February 10, 2024.
The Jason DaCosta trainee won the maiden special weight race for native-bred three-year-old colts and geldings over 5 furlongs (1,000m) straight by 9 ½ lengths. Owned by Elizabeth DaCosta, Teflon Don won the race in a time of 1:01.2 (23.2 x 46.1).
“This was a pretty cheap field, and he [ Teflon Don] did what he needed to do to win. Hopefully, he will continue to improve, and we will see what he does from here on,” DaCosta told the Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“It is early days yet to be talking about Classic races, and it is left to be seen. We will step him up little by little, and we are hopeful he will get a distance of ground, and we will take it from there,” the trainer added.
With Robert Halledeen in the saddle, Teflon Don showed good speed off the line and led the field ahead of his five other rivals.
Teflon Don stayed with the field for the first part of the race until, crossing the dummy rails, he accelerated and powered home for a win by 9 ½ lengths.
The General (Dane Dawkins) finished second, while Bold Shadow (Tevin Foster) came home in third place.
Teflon Don is bred by Casual Trick out of the Even The Score mare, The Lady Score.
