Sudlow shines at Carifta Trials
ST Catherine’s Rohanna Sudlow produced an impressive performance to capture the girls’ Under-19 long jump competition on yesterday’s opening day of the three-day Carifta Trials inside National Stadium in Kingston. Sudlow cut the sand at 5.99m to win the event ahead of St Elizabeth Technical High School’s (STETHS) Richelle Stanley at 5.97m.
However, despite her victory, Sudlow said she was not totally satisfied with her performance because she wanted to better her personal-best mark of 6.01m.
“I could have done a lot better because I wanted to come out and get a personal best,” she said. “However, I went out there and I did what I had to do to get the victory in this event.
“I came third at the last Carifta Games in this event, in the Under-17 section, but now I am competing with the big girls so I am definitely going for the gold medal this year.”
Clarendon College’s Jamelia Young captured the girls’ Under-17 shot put title with a throw of 13.33m. Merl Grove’s Abigail Bennett was second with a mark of 12.24m while Jessica Thompson of St Jago was third with a throw of 11.10m.
STETHS’s Shanque Williams clocked a smart 54.09 to lead all eight competitors into today’s final of the girls’ Under-20 400m event. She is expected to receive strong competition from Excelsior’s Breana Brown (54.25), Hydel’s Abigail Campbell (54.42), Kelly-Ann Carr from Edwin Allen (54.69), and Anecia Campbell of Bellefield (55.17).
Foga Road’s Paul Henry clocked a smart 48.58 to top qualifiers heading into today’s final of the boys’ Under-17 event. In fact, Henry was the only man to go under 48 seconds during yesterday’s preliminary round of the competition. Ardenne’s Zachary Rowe (49.19), Nickecoy Bramwell (49.63), Jerise Brooks from Alphansus Davis (49.31), and Gregory McFarlene of Excelsior are other main qualifiers for today’s final.
Hydel’s Natassia Fletcher leads all qualifiers into today’s final of the girls’ Under-17 400m event after winning her heat in 55.46. She is expected to receive good competition from Britannia Bailey from Holmwood, who clocked 55.59 to win her heat, and Tresha Sutherland from Clarendon College who was also victorious in her heat in 56.01.
The other qualifiers for today’s final are Kevina Bourne of Port Antonio (56.02) and Shanika Lindsay from Alphansus Davis (56.03).
